Visualization Synthesis System

The Kestrel Institute Visualization Synthesis system:

  • automatically generates different kinds of tables and diagrams for displaying electronic data
  • developed by Kestrel Institute with support from AFHRL and NOSC
  • based on a formal theory of visual display of relational data

The Visualization Synthesis System uses transformational technology:

  • to remove redundancy in a display
  • to give different views of the data
  • for information preserving restructuring performed at the abstract relational level (e.g. set to characteristic function)
  • for primitive visual representations for basic relationships (e.g. adjacency and connecting lines represent pairing; containment for sets; length for quantity) composed to represent complex relationships

Examples of applications of the Visualization Synthesis System:

  • generating displays of technical data specialized for different screen geometries and color capabilities
  • dependency graphs and tables of interesting relationships in large software systems of different kinds and at different levels

Below is a tree of several different table visualizations of the same data, using different transformations to generate each display.
